The Glasgow Magdalene Institute was home to thousands of women and girls, held there between and , forced to work in the laundry as penance for their sexuality. Before washing machines became commonplace in homes, clothes were sent there to be cleaned, but no one spoke of the women that worked there, locked up behind the buildings forbidding walls. These women were in fact all aged between 15 and 19, and despite the fact that none had been convicted of a criminal offence, the police hunted them down, rounded them up and brought them back. The public were even warned to look out for their distinctive uniforms. They escaped again down a fire escape and held a rooftop protest in which they threw notes down to the reporters on the street below.

JK Rowling on Twitter: why the Harry Potter author has been accused of transphobia on social media platforms. The women were institutionalised as part of the Glasgow System, which brought together police, the medical profession, churches and the local authority to tackle the ills of the city. The high rates of servicemen infected with VD was a key concern of the day — but the system only ever targeted women who were considered to be the carriers and spreaders of the infection. Women could now be forced to undergo an intimate examination by a plain clothes policeman tasked to seek out women of dubious repute. Those found to be infected had their heads shaved and were sent the Lock Hospital in Rottenrow, where a brutal array of treatments, such as mercury baths to treat syphilis, was administered.
Also some that are not so old. Some of them are not used much now. The Scottish dialect can vary so much, from The Highlands to South Ayrshire, and from East to West, so in different parts of the country, different words can actually mean the same thing. Honestly, some of these sayings will have you scratching your head, as I did, but I will translate the meanings, as I understand them.
